Start strumming from the first class.
Students learn string names, tuning, chords, strumming patterns, riffs, and simple tab. Short skill blocks and recognizable songs help each new idea feel useful right away, while group playing strengthens listening, timing, and confidence.

Build a beat, then play it together.
Students explore the drum kit, stick control, steady rock beats, fills, rests, and simple drum tab. Play-alongs turn counting and coordination into music, while shared grooves help students listen, create, and stay in time together.

Every Beginner Instrument Group follows the same welcoming approach. Children learn practical skills in short, focused blocks, use them in music, and grow alongside other beginners. The instrument changes; the age range, beginner fit, and supportive class experience stay the same.

Beginner Instrument Group questions
Does my child need music experience?
No. Every Beginner Instrument Group is designed as an accessible starting point. Instructors introduce skills step by step and help students use them in songs from the beginning.
How long is each class?
Classes are 30 minutes and take place once a week. Session length varies, with current dates shown in the registration portal.
What does a Beginner Instrument Group cost?
Beginner Instrument Groups cost $70 per month or $250 for the full session. Current payment options appear in the registration portal before checkout.
Does my child need to bring an instrument?
No. Students may use YBM instruments in both programs. Guitar students are also welcome to bring their own guitar, and drums are provided in class. After the first few classes, we recommend having an instrument or practice option at home for the best possible experience.
What should my child use to practise at home?
Regular at-home practice is highly recommended for both programs, but it is fine to try the first couple of classes without an instrument at home. For most guitar students ages 8–12, a ¾-size acoustic guitar is a good fit; the instructor can confirm the right size before you buy. Drum students can practise with sticks and a practice pad or quiet kit.
Do children attend independently?
Yes. Children attend class independently, and caregivers wait outside the classroom during the 30-minute class.
How many students are in each group?
Groups usually have three to six students, depending on the program. Drum groups are kept smaller.
Can my child join after the session has started?
Yes. Students can join partway through a session when space is available. The instructor will accommodate their starting point and help them settle into the group.
Where are classes held?
Ayr classes are at 45 Stanley Street in Watson Mall, with step-free access. Hespeler classes are at 25 Sheffield Street in Cambridge, on the second floor with stair access only. See location details and the map.
Can my child try a class first?
Yes, during designated trial windows. New YBM members can choose two trial classes for $10 or four for $15, subject to space and the current session. Check Group Class Trial Pack availability. The first regular class is also covered by our satisfaction guarantee. Contact us within 24 hours and we’ll make it right or offer a full refund.
How should my child choose an instrument group?
Choose the available instrument your child is most excited to try first. Every option has the same age and experience requirements and follows the same beginner-friendly group approach. Your child can explore another instrument in a future group, camp, or private lesson.
What happens after the session?
The next step depends on your child’s interests and progress. Students may repeat the group to strengthen their foundation, join an available band program, or move into private lessons for more individualized study.
What is the withdrawal policy?
You may withdraw through the YBM Portal with at least two weeks’ notice to end attendance and billing. The Portal shows the final class date and any billing adjustment before submission. Trial Pack credits are non-refundable if unused. Full Terms & Conditions are also provided during registration.
